Clay Aiken: Unbroken Record

Idollive.net charted the debut singles for all 8 American Idol season winners and runners-up. The chart they did can be viewed here.

Clay Aiken still holds the record for the highest debut single sales. For now, Clay also holds the record for highest debut album sales. Below is the same chart in sales number order. Season and placement precede the names. The last 2 numbers (ex. #1 and #52) reflect chart positions, peak and debut. Kris Allen and Adam Lambert have only been on the charts for 1 week so their peak numbers may change.

2-R) Clay Aiken, "This Is The Night / Bridge over Troubled Water" - 393,000* - #1 (#1)
2-W) Ruben Studdard, "Flying Without Wings / Superstar" - 286,000* - #2 (#2)
7-W) David Cook, "The Time of My Life" - 236,024 - #3 (#3)
1-W) Kelly Clarkson, "A Moment Like This / Before Your Love" - 236,000* - #1 (#52)
5-W) Taylor Hicks, "Do I Make You Proud / Takin' It to the Streets" - 190,147* - #1 (#1)
3-W) Fantasia, "I Believe / Chain of Fools / Summertime" - 142,141* - #1 (#1)
8-W) Kris Allen, "No Boundaries" - 134,458 - #11 (#11)
4-W) Carrie Underwood, "Inside Your Heaven / Independence Day" - 131,504* - #1 (#1)
8-R) Adam Lambert, "Mad World" - 114,763 - #19 (#19)
4-R) Bo Bice, "Inside Your Heaven / Vehicle" - 108,158* - #2 (#2)
6-W) Jordin Sparks, "This Is My Now" - 74,303 - #15 (#15)
7-R) David Archuleta, "Imagine" - 71,178 - #36 (#36)
6-R) Blake Lewis, "You Give Love a Bad Name" - 70,133 - #18 (#18)
3-R) Diana DeGarmo, "Dreams / Don't Cry Out Loud / I Believe" - 65,000* - #14 (#14)
5-R) Katharine McPhee, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow / My Destiny" - 47,394* - #12 (#12)

Clay, Taylor, Fantasia and Carrie were the only idols to debut at #1. Kelly's single rose from it's debut position to #1 and she holds the record for the fastest rising single.

Very interesting!!! Thank you for combining the two charts. Other than Clay Aiken, it's pretty consistent that the winners do better than the runner-up - at least immediately off the show.

Clay Aiken's unbroken record remains!! It is interesting that it usually is the winner who sells more.

I wish Clay would get back to the music. That is why I am a fan. I appreciate his humanitarian accomplishments but I want to hear Clay sing. I want to see him in concerts. I want to buy his music. I wish Clay would start concentrating on his music career.
