Ashes by Clay Aiken
Ashes was the song from Clay Aiken's On My Way Here album that he said he wanted as the first single. His label chose instead to release the title song as the first single. Using a slow ballad gave a false impression of what kind of songs were on this album.
This live performance of Ashes is from Clay's appearance on Good Morning America in May 2008.
[Chorus]
Turn around and see what love's done for me
You would not believe the way I used to be, so cold
Maybe love requires walking through the fire
To set me free, so I could rise up from the ashes
Send it up in flames
Let it light the sky
Now that I know pain...I'm more alive
I'm more alive
[Chorus]
Turn around and see what love's done for me
You would not believe the way I used to be, so cold
Maybe love requires walking through the fire
To set me free, so I could rise up from the ashes

ASHES LYRICS by CLAY AIKEN
Someone told me
What doesn't kill you only
Makes you stronger, sets you free
From all that held you down
With all my heart, I believed
The ember burning
Was a dream deep in me
When everything went up in flames
I still walked away
[Chorus]
Turn around and see what love's done for me
You would not believe the way I used to be, so cold
Maybe love requires walking through the fire
To set me free, so I could rise up from the ashes
I was broken
A million pieces left to hold
I was frozen
My heart left out in the cold
Looking back I can see
How the voice of reason
Kept reminding me
I was never good enough somehow
Try and remind me now
Someone told me
What doesn't kill you only
Makes you stronger, sets you free
From all that held you down
With all my heart, I believed
The ember burning
Was a dream deep in me
When everything went up in flames
I still walked away
[Chorus]
Turn around and see what love's done for me
You would not believe the way I used to be, so cold
Maybe love requires walking through the fire
To set me free, so I could rise up from the ashes
I was broken
A million pieces left to hold
I was frozen
My heart left out in the cold
Looking back I can see
How the voice of reason
Kept reminding me
I was never good enough somehow
Try and remind me now
[Chorus]
Turn around and see what love's done for me
You would not believe the way I used to be, so cold
Maybe love requires walking through the fire
To set me free, so I could rise up from the ashes
Send it up in flames
Let it light the sky
Now that I know pain...I'm more alive
I'm more alive
[Chorus]
Turn around and see what love's done for me
You would not believe the way I used to be, so cold
Maybe love requires walking through the fire
To set me free, so I could rise up from the ashes

Great blog! Always very enjoyable! Loved the video! I was there and what wonderful memories of a superb performance by Clay. I certainly wish that "Ashes" had been released as the first single!!
Lovely blog, Truth. I too wish that Ashes had been released as the first single. What a difference that could have made in sales of "On My Way Here"! RCA has been too stupid to be believed.
I do agree 100% that the upbeat Ashes, Falling, Everything I Don't Need, etc. would all have been more logical choices.
Oh well, THE BEST IS YET TO COME..Right!!
Ashes is one of the better songs on OMWH, though I love the whole album. I think this would have been a much better choice for the single. Great blog. I am stuck right now watching the video over and over, lol
I'm hoping he will sing Ashes in concert. It's a great song and he "will rise up from the ashes."
Love Clay Aiken!!!
Great blog
