Clay Aiken - Sales?

I just read a very disturbing paragraph in a Billboard article about David Cook.

At the request of American Idol producers Apple/iTunes agreed to hold back reporting sales figures until the Season 7 winner was chosen.

David Cook Sizzles With Record Chart Debuts

"This is the first week of the 2008 season that "American Idol" downloads counted toward Billboard's charts. In cooperation with the show's producers, Apple withheld reporting iTunes sales of those songs until the week of the final episode."

I realize that record sales are down for all artists, including Clay Aiken, but after reading about this deal I can't help wondering whether or not AI would also ask to have sales for other AI alumni held back to make their chosen ones look good.
If they can make this deal with iTunes who else can they make a deal with?

With Kelly Clarkson's My December album her sales were way off from her Breakaway album. So was Clay Aiken's A Thousand Different Ways album. You can't sell what is not stocked in stores. Clay isn't promoted overseas so worldwide sales figures just don't enter into the equation. Kelly is promoted overseas and her album did quite well outside the U.S. Of course Simon Cowell predicted that Carrie Underwood would be the best selling AI alumni - and reported sales figures are bearing that out.

After this admission in Billboard my question is can we trust that the reported sales for these artists are accurate.

Let me see if I understand correctly. AI asked iTunes to hold off reporting sales figures as in letting the sales accumulate over a period of time such as a week, 2 weeks, whatever until after the finale and they had a winner. Soooo the first week sales figures for David Cook are inflated (false)? Is that what I'm reading?

That's how I read it. Seems a little more than crooked to me. Is tampering with sales figures illegal?

It's all about payola, who pads whose wallet. If one is likely to bring money to them, they are more likely to "inflate" the number.

IMHO

Happy for Clay and Jaymes.

Great Blog Truth!

Just another example of AI seeing to it that the end result is what they want.

Sadly, this business does not surprise me at all. It's amazing the things I've learned about the recording industry since becoming a Clay Aiken fan.

**shakes head sadly**

And people pick on Clay just because he's a good person and doesn't fit the mold - they should take a long hard look at themselves. I sometimes wonder how they can sleep at night.
